SOURCES OF ENERGY

Lesson 4

Hello everyone! I hope you are keeping well and taking good care of yourself!

Learning outcomes :

  • explore alternate sources of energy giving prime importance to environmental consequences

All energy sources have some impact on our environment

Fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas—do substantially more harm than renewable energy sources by most measures, including air and water pollution, damage to public health, wildlife and habitat loss, water use, land use, and global warming emissions.

No source of energy can be called pollution-free, because, the use of any source of energy disturbs the environment in one way or the other.

A source of energy like a solar cell is pollution free in actual operation but the assembly of the device might have caused some damage to the environment.

So, in absolute sense, no source of energy can be called pollution free.

Q.Hydrogen has been used as a rocket fuel. Would you

consider it a cleaner fuel than CNG? Why or why not?

Hydrogen is a cleaner fuel than CNG.
This is due to the reason that it produces water on burning CNG on burning produces CO2, though much less than that produced when coal or oil is burnt.
The increase in concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere increases the temperature of atmosphere.

Q. 9. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a solar cooker? Are there places where solar cookers would have limited utility?

Advantages of a solar cooker : (1) There is no cost of fuel.
...
Disadvantages of solar cooker:
  • It is slow.
  • It can not be used in rainy or cloudy days.
  • you can not cook all kind of foods using solar cooker.
  • it can not be used every where on the earth.

Q. 10.     What are the environmental consequences of the increasing demand for energy? What steps would you suggest to reduce energy consumption?

(i) Combustion of fossil fuels is causing air pollution, acid rain and global warming.
(ii) Buiding of hydropower plants disturbs the ecological balance of the water bodies and aquatic organisms.
(iii) The ever increasing demand of firewood has severely decreased the forest area causing global warming.
(iv) Use of nuclear sources poses the risk of radioactivity caused by nuclear waste.
Some of the steps that could be taken to reduce energy consumption are.
(i) Switching off the lights, fans, air-conditioners etc. when not in use.
(ii) Using efficient electrical appliances.
(iii) Using a bicycle or public mode of transport to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.
