Life Process- Nutrition 4

LIFE PROCESSES   (CLASS 10)
Lesson 4

Welcome back students!

Let us check our answers of yesterday’s assignment.
Q1) List the nutrients required by a plant for photosynthesis other than carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and how do plants get them?
A1) Plants require nutrients such as nitrogen, magnesium, phosphorus and iron other than carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Plants take these nutrients from soil by roots. Nitrogen is taken up in the form of nitrites and nitrates.

Q2) Why is nitrogen essential for plants?
A2) Nitrogen is used in the synthesis of proteins and other compounds.

So, now let us continue with our today’s class:

By the end of today’s class you will be able to
         1)      Study various types of heterotrophic nutrition.
         2)      Classify organisms on the basis of nutrition.
         3)      Draw neat labelled diagram to show nutrition in amoeba.

PLEASE COPY EVERYTHING IN YOUR BIOLOGY NOTEBOOK EXCEPT THAT WHICH IS WRITTEN IN RED. KEEP YOUR NCERT WITH YOU FOR ANY REFERENCE.

TYPES OF HETEROTROPHIC NUTRITION
1)      SAPROPHYTIC NUTRITION- In this mode of nutrition, organisms release enzymes to digest the dead organic food and derive nourishment from dead, decaying organic matter.  Eg . Mushroom, mould, yeast

2) PARASITIC NUTRITION- some organisms live outside or inside the body of
Other organisms(host) and derive their nourishment from the host. This mode
Of nutrition is called parasitic nutrition. Eg plasmodium (malarial parasite), tapeworm, amarbel
(cuscuta)

3) HOLOZOIC NUTRITION-   it is defined as the feeding of complex organic matter by ingestion   which is subsequently digested and absorbed. Egs. Humans, amoeba

We take in food through our mouth, food gets digested in our stomach and intestines, digested food is then absorbed by blood and taken to all cells of our body, energy is released and undigested food is expelled out. So, holozoic nutrition involves following five steps.

STEPS OF HOLOZOIC NUTRITION

        a)      INGESTION – taking in complex food.
        b)      DIGESTION- breaking down complex food into simple absorb-able form.
        c)      ABSORPTION- the digested food is absorbed by the blood and transported to every cell of the body.
       d)      ASSIMILATION – utilization of digested food to produce energy.
        e)      EGESTION- throwing out of undigested food.

HOME ASSIGNMENT

Q1) Explain the process of digestion in amoeba ( must write in points)and draw figure 6.5  page 98.
Q2) Explain how Paramecium obtains it’s food?
Q3) Give one example each of plant parasite, animal parasite, ecto parasite and an endo parasite.
