Chemical Reactions and Equations
WORKSHEET

1. What do you mean by the term: "Combination Reaction'? Give one example giving balanced chemical equation for the reaction.
2. Write balanced chemical equations for the following:
      (a) Dil Sulphuric acid reacts with aluminium powder.
      (b) Dil hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium carbonate
      (c) carbon dioxide is passed through lime water

3. Name the material formed when aqueous solutions of sodium sulphate and barium chloride are mixed. Give the balanced chemical equation of the reaction involved.

4. Write balanced chemical equations for the following reactions:
(i) Calcium hydroxide + Carbon dioxide --> Calcium carbonate +water
(ii) Zinc + Silver nitrate --> Zinc nitrate + Silver
(iii) Aluminium + Copper chloride --> Aluminium chloride + Copper

5. What happen when silver chloride is exposed to sunlight? Write chemical equation for this reaction. Also give one use of such a reaction.

6. Solid calcium oxide was taken in a container and water was added slowly to  it.
(i) State the two observations made in the experiment.              (ii) Write the name and chemical formula of the product formed.

7. Compound 'A' when dissolved in water gives compound 'B' which is used in whitewashing. Compound 'B' reacts with CO2 to form a white precipitate of compound 'C'. Identify 'A', 'B' and 'C'. Also write the equations involved.

8. When a student added  zinc granules to dilute HCl, a colourless and odurless gas was evolved which was then tested with burning match stick: Name the gas evolved and write the observation.

9. Iron filings were added to a  solution of CuSO4 . After 10 minutes, it was observed that the blue colour of the solution changes and a layer gets deposited  on iron  fillings. What is the colour of the solution and the layer deposited?

10. (a) Name the two gases evolved when green crystals of ferrous sulphate are heated.
(b) What happens when a piece of zinc is added to a solution of sulphuric acid?
(c) How the rancidity of food material can be prevented?            (d) Why dry HCI does not change the colour of the dry pH paper.
(e) Why the bulb does not glow in case of glucose and alcohol solutions.

11. (a) What is oxidation?                                                             (b) Identify the substances that are oxidized and the substances that are reduced in the following reactions:
Fe2O3 + 2Al --> Al2O3 + 2Fe
2PbO + C   -->  2Pb + CO
2

12. Explain the three types of decomposition reaction with balanced chemical reactions.
13. Give one example of combination reaction.

14. Which gases are evolved on heating ferrous sulphate?

15.State any two characteristics of the following chemical reactions:
(a) Dilute sulphuric acid is added to zinc granules in a test tube  (b) Potassium lodide solution is mixed with lead nitrate solution

16. Write the chemical equation for the above reaction                            (i)  Magnesium + Oxygen  ------> Magnesium oxide

17. Translate and balance the following chemical equations-       (a) Solid lead nitrate is heated to give solid lead oxide, nitrogen dioxide gas and oxygen gas.
(b) Iron reacts with steam to give ferric oxide and hydrogen gas.

18. What is an oxidising agent?

19. What do you observe when penta hydrated copper-Sulphate crystals are heated? Give reaction also.

20. (a) What happens chemically when quick lime is added to water?
(b) Balance the following chemical equation:                                       MnO2 + HCl --> MnCl2 + Cl2 + H2O
(c) What is decomposition reaction? Explain it with suitable example
